CATL partnered with Dutch energy provider Alfen N.V. to supply 5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of TENER sodium-ion energy storage systems. This agreement represents the first large-scale rollout of sodium-ion technology in Europe. It also marks CATL’s first bulk supply of this technology to a European client.
Deployment will begin in 2027 across the Netherlands and other Western European countries. The collaboration aims to leverage sodium-ion batteries for greater raw material cost stability compared to lithium-ion. CATL will use the project to gain experience with European grid standards and drive global expansion.
