Florence is expanding its ban on new short-term tourist rentals to neighborhoods outside its UNESCO-listed historic center. The municipal executive approved the measure to cover more than 100,000 homes. This expansion nearly triples the number of properties subject to the restrictions. The city council expects to issue final approval for the measure in early June.
The move extends a 2023 policy that froze new short-term lets in the city core. Mayor Sara Funaro stated the goal is to alleviate housing pressures for local residents. The regulation halts the creation of new rentals in specified areas for two years. The extension exempts existing, legally operating rentals from the new rules. This measure reflects a growing trend of overtourism regulation across popular European destinations.
