Airbus is pursuing Sweden’s Saab as a preferred partner for future fighter jet development. This shift follows the collapse of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), a joint program between France, Germany, and Spain.

The ambitious defense project carried a valuation exceeding €100 billion. Official termination followed years of unresolved disputes between Airbus and France’s Dassault Aviation.

Industrial disagreements centered on leadership roles, intellectual property rights, and workshare distribution. German and French leaders concluded the joint next-generation fighter was no longer viable.

Airbus has reportedly engaged in exploratory talks with Saab for several months. This potential alliance could fundamentally restructure European defense and aerospace markets.
