South Korea announced a $576 billion semiconductor and AI investment plan, backed by Samsung and SK Hynix, to strengthen its global chip leadership. For AMAT — which sells the machines these factories need — the announcement amounts to a decade-long order book tailwind.
Four New Fabs Mean Years of Equipment Orders. Samsung and SK Hynix will each build two new semiconductor fabrication plants in South Korea's southwest as part of an 800 trillion won ($518 billion) national semiconductor ecosystem project. Every new fab requires billions in lithography, deposition, and etching tools — AMAT's bread and butter. The new facilities target completion by 2034–2035 , giving AMAT extended revenue visibility well beyond typical one- to two-year equipment cycles.
Record Earnings Already Priced a Boom — This Extends It. AMAT reported record fiscal Q2 2026 revenue of $7.91 billion and earnings of $3.51 per share, with the highest gross margin in over 25 years.
Management raised its semiconductor equipment business growth outlook for calendar 2026 to above 30%. The Korean mega-project reinforces that guidance and could push estimates higher still: analysts expect AMAT's earnings to grow 28.5% this fiscal year to $12.10 per share, followed by 31.9% to $15.96 next year.
The Stock Is Now Outrunning Most Analyst Targets. At $652, AMAT trades well above the average analyst price target of $551.91. Even aggressive upgrades — Jefferies lifted its target to $770 , Wells Fargo to $715 , and BofA to $720 — show a stock already pricing in an optimistic scenario. Execution Risks Aren't Zero. Industry experts have flagged challenges including power supply, water availability, and skilled labor needed to support large-scale chip expansion.
The 2034–2035 target completion date means these facilities will need AI demand to remain robust for the better part of a decade. If AI spending cycles cool before fabs finish, today's euphoric valuation becomes harder to defend. The upside case is real — but at 52 times earnings, so is the downside if any pillar cracks.
