Amazon CEO Andy Jassy alerted the White House after researchers discovered security flaws in Anthropic’s Fable 5 AI model. The vulnerabilities allowed users to jailbreak the model to generate information for cyberattacks. Jassy personally communicated these risks to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

The Commerce Department issued an export control directive on June 12 following government verification. This order barred foreign nationals from accessing the Fable 5 and underlying Mythos 5 models. Anthropic disabled global access to both models just days after the Fable 5 launch to comply with the mandate.

Anthropic disputed the findings, calling the vulnerability a minor issue present in other available AI models. Amazon remains a major investor and cloud provider for Anthropic despite triggering the regulatory crackdown on its partner.
