Financial giants American Express and JPMorgan Chase report a significant shift in consumer behavior among younger demographics. Gen Z and Millennial customers are increasingly bypassing entry-level credit cards for high-annual-fee premium products. These users prioritize perks that align with their lifestyles, including credits for dining, streaming services, and exclusive event access.
American Express tailored its offerings to attract these younger, high-spending customers. Millennials and Gen Z now represent the company's largest and fastest-growing spending cohort. This demographic accounts for over 60% of all new consumer accounts at American Express. Spending by this group reached a record high in a recent quarter. Reportedly, 77% of all new American Express accounts consist of premium-tier cards.
