A new report from WPP reveals a major power shift in the global advertising industry, with six Chinese companies now ranking among the world's top 10 sellers of advertising. The list, which is now entirely composed of tech and e-commerce platforms, includes China's Alibaba, ByteDance, PDD, Tencent, JD.com, and Kuaishou. They join US tech giants Google, Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft, marking the first time no traditional media companies are present in the top tier.
The findings underscore the dramatic rise of retail and social media platforms as the primary channels for advertising revenue, supplanting legacy media outlets. The report highlights that the five largest global ad sellers—Google, Meta, ByteDance, Amazon, and Alibaba—now account for 58% of the market. This concentration of ad spending on a few dominant platforms signals a fundamental change in the competitive landscape for brands and traditional advertising agencies.
