Shares of BE Semiconductor Industries plunged 7% to €226.90 after reports that Samsung and SK Hynix — the world's two largest memory chipmakers — are pushing back their timelines for adopting the company's marquee technology. Although hybrid bonding had been expected to debut with HBM4, both companies continued using conventional bonding methods, and industry forecasts now point to 16-high HBM4E as the earliest likely adoption point. For BESI, which has staked its entire growth story on this technology, the delay raises urgent questions about when its biggest revenue catalyst will actually arrive.

• Memory Makers Found a Cheaper Workaround — and That Buys Them Time. The urgency of adopting hybrid bonding has eased as Samsung and SK Hynix develop alternative technologies to improve heat performance — the very advantage hybrid bonding was supposed to deliver.

Manufacturers plan to continue using refined conventional bonding while pursuing other thermal designs, allowing them to reduce manufacturing risk while preserving production capacity. That means near-term equipment orders for BESI's highest-margin product could slip.

• BESI Just Raised Targets That Now Look Aggressive. At its June 18 Investor Day, BESI raised its long-term revenue target to €1.7–2.2 billion, up from €1.5–1.9 billion — roughly a 3.7x increase from 2025's €591 million.

Hybrid bonding revenue alone was projected to reach approximately €476 million by 2026. If memory-related bonding orders are delayed by even one or two generations — each lasting roughly 12–18 months — that trajectory steepens considerably.

• The Stock's Valuation Leaves No Room for Slippage. BESI trades at a trailing price-to-earnings ratio exceeding 130x, and some analysts have cautioned that this already reflects significant AI growth, leaving little room for error if adoption delays worsen. The stock has now fallen roughly 11% from its July 10 close of €255.30, erasing much of its post-Investor Day gains.

• The Long Game Isn't Dead — But It Got Longer. Industry expectations still position hybrid bonding as essential for future generations; by HBM5E, scaling pressures are expected to make the technology far more difficult to avoid, transitioning it from a competitive advantage to a practical requirement.

BESI's own management forecasts HBM4E as the first significant application point, with large-scale deployment in 2027 and widespread adoption with HBM5. The thesis survives — but investors are now being asked to wait longer for payoff, at a price that was set for a faster timeline.
