BHP, Vale Secure Support for $32.7 Billion Settlement as More Cities Join

Nineteen additional Brazilian municipalities, including Mariana, joined a compensation agreement with BHP, Vale, and their joint venture Samarco.

This expansion brings the total to 45 out of 49 eligible cities participating in the deal.

The settlement allocates 170 billion reais ($32.7 billion) to address damages from the 2015 dam collapse.

Participating cities previously resisted the deal due to a parallel lawsuit against BHP in London.

The agreement aims to resolve legal and financial uncertainties following one of Brazil's worst environmental disasters.
