BNSF Railway is publicly opposing a proposed $85 billion merger between Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern. This deal would create the first single-line railroad connecting the Pacific and Atlantic coasts.

BNSF CEO Katie Farmer warns the consolidation would reduce transportation options and increase shipping rates. The merger would place nearly 50% of all U.S. rail freight volume under one carrier. Farmer argues these changes would contribute to national inflation.

BNSF has joined a coalition of rail companies, customer groups, and unions to lobby against the transaction. The Surface Transportation Board (STB) is currently reviewing the proposal.
