North Carolina environmental advocates are challenging an EPA decision to reconsider drinking water standards for PFAS compounds, including GenX.

The Fayetteville Works plant discharged these chemicals into the Cape Fear River for decades. This contamination currently affects drinking water for hundreds of thousands of residents.

Rescinding these standards could weaken legal claims against The Chemours Company. Communities and water utilities are currently seeking tens of millions of dollars for cleanup and treatment costs.

Advocates state that enforceable federal standards are necessary to ensure Chemours pays for these significant expenses.
