Ford is bidding for the UK Ministry of Defense’s light mobility vehicle program to supply NATO’s next generation of military transport. The multi-billion dollar contract seeks to replace the existing fleet of Land Rovers and Pinzgauer vehicles.
Ford is partnering with General Dynamics and UK engineering group Ricardo to compete for the deal. The proposed military vehicles will be based on the Ford Ranger pickup truck platform.
The company is leveraging the Ranger’s existing European production scale and price competitiveness to appeal to the British military. This initiative marks Ford’s first significant move back into the defense sector since selling its dedicated unit to Loral Corp. in 1990.
