Fannie Mae dismissed between 10 and 12 senior executives on Wednesday. The sudden leadership shake-up impacted the multifamily lending, capital markets, finance, and regulatory affairs divisions. Departures included the company’s chief economist and the chief operating officer of its multifamily business.

Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte cited technology improvements and artificial intelligence as the primary drivers for the reduction. These dismissals follow a period of significant leadership changes, including the departure of the company's CEO in 2025.

Industry experts warned that the exodus creates a brain drain at the core mortgage institution. This loss of experience could impair Fannie Mae’s ability to manage risk and navigate an uncertain housing market.
