Google and Epic Games abandoned their joint effort to modify a court-ordered injunction. The injunction requires significant changes to the Android app ecosystem. The companies withdrew their motion after U.S. District Judge James Donato expressed skepticism, questioning if proposed alterations would undermine competition.
Google must now comply with the original, stricter terms of the injunction stemming from Epic's 2023 antitrust victory. This mandates Google allow third-party app stores within its Play Store and provide them access to its app catalog.
Google will begin implementing these changes on July 22. The company stated it withdrew the motion to avoid a prolonged legal process and associated uncertainty for the developer ecosystem.
