Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) launched a new virtual power plant (VPP) initiative called SHARE. It partnered with Alphabet's Google, Rewiring America, Tesla, Sunrun, and others.
The project aims to create a coordinated network of home energy devices, such as batteries and smart appliances. This network will better manage energy demand in California's Bay Area.
The SHARE (Smart Home Assets for Reliability and Efficiency) program will initially enroll nearly 21,000 existing devices. These devices will help stabilize the power grid during peak demand.
This approach will improve grid reliability and lower costs for all customers. It utilizes existing home resources instead of building new conventional power plants.
Google fully funds the program. The program is expected to run through 2027.
