Andrej Karpathy, a founding member of OpenAI and former Tesla AI director, has joined rival AI lab Anthropic. The move strengthens Anthropic’s position in the competition for elite talent against OpenAI and Google.
Karpathy will join the pre-training team to lead a new unit focused on using the Claude model to accelerate future development. He previously served as the director of AI at Tesla, where he led the Autopilot team.
Karpathy announced the transition on X, formerly Twitter. He stated that the next few years at the frontier of large language models will be especially formative for research and development.
