Custom-designed Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) drive roughly 75% of this capacity. Google’s infrastructure currently includes an estimated 3.8 million TPUs and 1.3 million GPUs.
The company relies on in-house hardware rather than external chips from vendors like Nvidia. This proprietary strategy differentiates Google from competitors like Microsoft and Amazon who remain more dependent on third-party suppliers.
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian stated that surging customer demand and growing revenue justify these massive capital expenditures. The company continues to invest heavily to expand its footprint in the cloud market.
