The European Commission’s AI Office activated new enforcement powers under the landmark AI Act on August 2, 2026. These regulations directly impact major technology firms including Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic.

The AI Office can now investigate advanced models and demand technical documentation. Violations related to general-purpose AI systems carry fines of up to €15 million. Penalties may also reach 3% of a company’s global annual turnover.

New mandates require companies to clearly label AI-generated content such as deepfakes. Chatbots must also explicitly disclose their AI identity to users.

Google has signed a voluntary code of practice and expressed intent to comply. However, the E.U. regulatory body maintains the authority to restrict market access for models deemed to pose significant risks.
