The Illinois Legislature passed Senate Bill 315, known as the Artificial Intelligence Safety Measures Act. The bill passed the House unanimously and now heads to Governor J.B. Pritzker for his signature.
The legislation mandates annual independent third-party safety audits for developers of the most powerful frontier AI models. Companies must publish transparency reports detailing how they manage catastrophic risks related to cybersecurity and bioweapons.
These audit requirements represent stricter regulatory measures than those currently enacted in California and New York. Major AI developers including OpenAI and Anthropic have expressed support for the new mandates.
