HDFC Bank, India’s largest private sector lender, reduced its workforce by 3,343 employees in fiscal year 2026. The bank reports a total headcount of 2,11,178. This reduction occurred despite a 12% expansion of the bank's balance sheet.

MD and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan characterized the move as a strategic redeployment rather than a cost-cutting measure. The bank is moving employees from back-end and operational roles to customer-facing positions. Technology and automation are driving these efficiency gains in internal operations.

The annual report also confirmed the resignation of the bank's part-time chairman. This departure has raised questions regarding the institution's governance.
