IBM revealed a new dual-architecture processor for its next-generation Z and LinuxONE systems at the Hot Chips conference. This processor marks the first time a mainframe chip natively executes both z/OS and Arm instructions on the same cores. The development follows a partnership established with Arm in April 2026.
The chip utilizes 2-nanometer technology. It features 11 cores running at speeds exceeding 5.7 GHz. IBM designed the hardware to attract Arm's global ecosystem of over 22 million developers.
Clients can now run modern Arm-native AI and cloud workloads directly alongside traditional mission-critical transaction systems. This design eliminates performance losses typically associated with virtualization or emulation. The architecture merges IBM's mainframe security with the flexibility of the expansive Arm software environment.
