IBM and its subsidiary Red Hat announced Project Lightwell, a $5 billion initiative to secure open-source software. The project establishes a trusted enterprise clearinghouse to identify and fix software vulnerabilities.

The initiative combines advanced AI with a workforce of over 20,000 engineers. This team validates and patches code at scale to protect the foundation of modern enterprise and AI systems.

IBM will offer commercial subscriptions for enterprises to access these validated patches. These subscriptions allow companies to integrate secure code directly into their existing software supply chains.

Early adopters include Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, and Mastercard. These financial institutions are collaborating with IBM to shape the project’s development.
