U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright canceled three proposed National Interest Electric Transmission Corridors (NIETCs) following an extensive policy review. The Department of Energy (DOE) halted development for the Lake Erie - Canada Corridor, the Southwestern Grid Connector Corridor, and the Tribal Energy Access Corridor.
Wright stated the designation process would not continue to ensure transmission policy serves the public rather than special interests or a climate-alarmist agenda. The administration argued the existing framework failed to improve grid reliability or reduce consumer costs.
This reversal ends projects previously promoted by the prior administration to accelerate national decarbonization. The decision creates significant uncertainty for large-scale infrastructure intended to connect remote renewable energy sources to the national power grid.
