NextEra Energy Resources, a subsidiary of utility giant NextEra Energy, is developing a proposal for a $13 billion natural gas power plant in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. The planned 3.75-gigawatt facility, named the East Riverside Energy Center, would be situated on a former mining site in Luzerne Township. The project is part of a broader energy infrastructure trade agreement between the U.S. and Japan and received federal funding for the buildout in August.
The development involves three combined cycle natural gas power plants on a 700-acre site. NextEra has been conducting feasibility studies, including environmental assessments and geotechnical reports, since March. Construction is tentatively planned to start in late 2027, with the plant becoming operational in phases between 2030 and 2032. The project is expected to create 2,000 construction jobs and 100 permanent operational roles.
