Intel has initiated small-scale test production of lower-end and legacy processors for Apple’s iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports the move serves as a strategic effort to diversify Apple’s supply chain.

Apple is seeking alternatives as primary manufacturer TSMC prioritizes production resources for the booming AI sector. The trial utilizes Intel’s 18A-P manufacturing process and Foveros packaging technology.

TSMC is expected to retain the majority of Apple’s high-end chip orders. However, the partnership provides significant validation for Intel’s contract manufacturing ambitions.

A full production ramp is scheduled for 2027 and 2028.
