CMS officially launched the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program on July 1, 2026. Eligible Medicare Part D beneficiaries can now access Wegovy and Zepbound for a fixed $50 monthly co-pay. The demonstration project will collect data on health outcomes and utilization through December 31, 2027.

CMS is bypassing traditional Part D sponsors to manage the program directly. Humana will provide centralized claims processing to ensure a consistent experience for all participants. This initiative aims to lower costs for seniors while evaluating the long-term impact of GLP-1 medications on the federal healthcare budget.

A study published today in the Journal of the American Heart Association supports the clinical expansion of these drugs. Researchers found that GLP-1s significantly reduce deaths, amputations, and hospitalizations for patients with Type 2 diabetes and peripheral artery disease. These results highlight the growing therapeutic importance of the drug class beyond weight loss.
