Novo Nordisk partnered with Vivani Medical to evaluate NPM-139, a miniature subdermal implant for semaglutide. This active ingredient currently powers the company's blockbuster drugs Ozempic and Wegovy.

The strategic move aims to counter rising competition from Eli Lilly in the GLP-1 receptor agonist market. The implant utilizes Vivani’s NanoPortal technology to provide steady medication delivery over extended periods.

Vivani plans to launch a first-in-human Phase 1 study for the implant in mid-2026. This clinical trial will use Novo Nordisk’s injectable Wegovy as the active comparator.

The collaboration focuses on drug delivery innovation to improve patient adherence compared to weekly injections. Novo Nordisk seeks to protect its position in the multi-billion dollar obesity market by addressing long-term treatment efficacy.
