Eli Lilly announced Thursday that its experimental obesity drug, retatrutide, met all primary and secondary endpoints in a pivotal Phase 3 trial.

The TRIUMPH-1 study tracked adults over an 80-week period. Participants on the highest dose lost an average of 28.3% of their body weight. Nearly half of these participants achieved weight loss of 30% or more. These results are comparable to outcomes typically seen with bariatric surgery.

The once-weekly injectable acts as a GIP, GLP-1, and glucagon triple hormone receptor agonist.

Eli Lilly shares rose approximately 1% in pre-market trading following the announcement. Shares of competitor Novo Nordisk declined in response to the data.
