Sweden will purchase the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) from Lockheed Martin. The deal totals approximately $729 million, or 7 billion Swedish crowns. Swedish Defence Minister Pal Jonson confirmed the acquisition.
The purchase includes about 10 HIMARS launchers and ammunition. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2027.
The acquisition provides the Swedish army with a long-range precision strike capability. The army currently lacks this capability.
Swedish defense company Saab will collaborate with Lockheed Martin. They will produce ammunition for the systems domestically.
The U.S. State Department previously approved a potential sale. This deal enhances Sweden's defense capabilities. It also strengthens cooperation with NATO allies.
