Mastercard and QNB Group processed Syria's first international card payment in over 15 years. This marks a step towards reconnecting Syria to the global financial system. An internationally issued Mastercard completed the point-of-sale transaction at an approved local merchant. This follows the technical reconnection of Syria's payment ecosystem to Mastercard's network.

International sanctions isolated Syria's financial sector for years. The transaction establishes foundational infrastructure for broader international payment acceptance. It aims to connect Syrian consumers and businesses to the global digital economy. The Governor of the Central Bank of Syria called this a key step in modernizing the country's payment systems. Visa also reportedly conducted a similar test transaction.
