European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced plans to regulate addictive social media designs. The proposal specifically targets TikTok and Meta platforms Instagram and Facebook.
Regulators aim to restrict features like endless scrolling, autoplay, and push notifications. These actions fall under the Digital Services Act to protect children and youth from attention-commodity practices.
The Commission is also investigating Meta for allegedly failing to enforce its 13-year-old minimum age requirement. An expert panel will advise on the formal legal proposal expected this summer.
