A federal judge denied Meta Platforms' request to dismiss a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by Eight Mile Style. The music publisher represents 243 of rapper Eminem's compositions. These works include the hit song Lose Yourself.
The lawsuit alleges that Facebook and Instagram illegally stored these songs in music libraries for use in Reels. These unlicensed tracks generated billions of views across Meta's platforms.
Eight Mile Style seeks statutory damages of up to $150,000 for each composition. Total potential damages in the case exceed $109 million.
Meta argued the publisher's claims were too general to proceed. The court found the allegations substantial enough to move the case into the evidence discovery phase.
Meta maintains it negotiated licensing in good faith and operates extensive licensing programs. The publisher contends a valid license for the compositions was never secured. Rapper Eminem is not personally involved in the legal action.
