Meta Platforms is offering rival AI chatbots one month of free access to its WhatsApp messaging service. This move responds to European Commission pressure regarding potential market dominance abuses.
Regulators are investigating whether Meta unfairly restricted competitors to favor its own Meta AI assistant. Meta previously blocked rival AI tools from WhatsApp on January 15, 2026.
The company amended its policy in March to allow competitor access for a fee. EU regulators viewed this fee-based model as an exclusionary practice and threatened to order full access restoration.
Meta launched the one-month free trial to address these antitrust concerns. The company continues to negotiate long-term commitments with European regulators.
