The European Commission issued preliminary findings that Meta breached the Digital Services Act (DSA). The regulator claims Meta failed to prevent children under 13 from accessing Facebook and Instagram.

Investigators found Meta’s age-verification measures ineffective, allowing minors to register with false birth dates. Reporting tools for underage users are reportedly difficult to use and lack proper follow-up.

The Commission argues Meta’s risk assessment ignores evidence of significant underage usage across the EU. This probe specifically targets Meta’s compliance with DSA obligations for protecting minors.

If these findings are upheld, Meta faces potential fines of up to 6% of its global annual turnover.
