Meta’s WhatsApp launched a feature allowing Indian users to recharge prepaid mobile plans directly within the app. The service operates through a partnership with payments firm PayU. Supported carriers include major telecom operators Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea. Android and iOS users can access the feature via a new rupee symbol on the home screen.

The initiative aims to increase payment service adoption in India, WhatsApp’s largest global market. WhatsApp currently trails competitors Google Pay and Walmart’s PhonePe in the region. The company seeks to capture a larger share of the digital payments landscape by integrating high-frequency transactions into daily user routines.
