WhatsApp is rolling out unique usernames to allow connections without sharing phone numbers. This optional privacy feature will launch globally later this year.
The platform will not maintain a public directory of these identities. Users must know an exact username to initiate contact.
Usernames must range from 3 to 35 characters. Permitted characters include letters, numbers, periods, and underscores.
Meta will allow businesses and creators to claim existing Instagram or Facebook handles on WhatsApp. This update aims to enhance user control over personal information.
