X has launched a completely rebuilt version of its Android app, capping a year-long effort to fix performance issues that have plagued its user base on the platform. The initiative was aimed at addressing the notoriously buggy older version, which lagged significantly behind its iOS counterpart.

The overhaul was deemed critical after the previous app's poor quality contributed to a steep decline in user growth. As of July 2025, new Android app installations had plummeted 44% year-over-year, creating a significant vulnerability that competitors like Meta's Threads were positioned to exploit. In response, X announced it was assembling a dedicated team to rewrite the application from the ground up in an effort to retain and grow its audience on the world's largest mobile operating system.
