The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) exempted islanded power plants serving single data centers from the Clean Air Act’s Acid Rain Program.
These facilities must operate independently from the public grid to qualify for the exemption. The Acid Rain Program regulates sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) to reduce smog and soot.
The EPA stated the move will accelerate AI infrastructure development and reduce strain on regional electric grids. This guidance provides developers more flexibility to meet surging electricity demand.
The action aligns with President Donald Trump’s Ratepayer Protection Pledge. This policy encourages companies to bear the full energy costs for their own facilities.
