OpenAI appointed Paul Christiano to its foundation's board of directors. Christiano will also join the company’s Safety and Security Committee.

Christiano previously led OpenAI’s alignment research team from 2017 to 2021. He is the founder of the Alignment Research Center and served as a senior technical advisor at the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

The researcher warns that uncontrolled superintelligence could cause humans to permanently lose control. Christiano has stated that such a failure in alignment could be fatal for most people. His appointment adds a technically-grounded safety perspective to OpenAI’s governance.
