OpenAI supports the creation of a U.S.-led global governance body for artificial intelligence that includes China as a member. Policy executives modeled the proposal after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to establish international safety standards and conduct inspections.

Vice President of Global Affairs Chris Lehane introduced the initiative as U.S. and Chinese leaders prepare to discuss AI policy. Lehane stated the plan offers an opportunity for both nations to build a lasting global framework for AI safety.

The proposed body aims to manage risks from increasingly powerful AI systems. OpenAI previously warned that advanced AI technology could pose existential threats comparable to nuclear war.
