OpenAI expands its ChatGPT advertising pilot to 31 European markets starting August 24. The rollout includes major economies such as Germany, France, Spain, and Italy. This move follows previous tests in the U.S., UK, Japan, and Brazil. OpenAI aims to monetize its user base to offset significant infrastructure costs.
Agency partners Publicis, WPP, and Omnicom will handle initial ad purchases. The company plans to launch a self-service advertising platform at a later date.
Ads will target users on the free and lower-cost 'Go' subscription tiers. Premium subscription plans will remain entirely ad-free. OpenAI will clearly separate ad content from standard ChatGPT responses. The company will not share private user conversations with advertisers.
