The U.S. Department of Defense launched military-specific versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok on its internal GenAI.mil platform. These models, named ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government, join Google’s Gemini which debuted in late 2025. Both tools are approved for Impact Level 5 to handle sensitive but unclassified information.
The platform serves the Pentagon’s three million military and civilian personnel. Integration will accelerate tasks including planning, logistics, administration, and supply-chain management.
This multi-vendor strategy aims to foster competition and avoid reliance on a single AI provider. Since its launch, over 1.7 million users across all military branches have adopted the GenAI.mil system.
