Germany and Spain lead the opposition against the European Commission’s plan to ban Chinese technology suppliers. The proposed ban targets companies like Huawei and ZTE within telecommunications networks.

Officials from both nations warn that an EU-level ban would increase 5G infrastructure costs. These leaders also expect the ban to delay network rollouts and trigger retaliation from Beijing.

The European Commission currently labels Huawei and ZTE as high-risk suppliers. Brussels intends to make exclusion recommendations legally binding by revising the Cybersecurity Act.

This resistance from two major economies highlights a division within the bloc over balancing security with economic interests.
