SAP avoided a potential EU antitrust fine by easing rules for customers to terminate contracts or switch providers. The European Commission made these commitments legally binding to end an investigation launched in September 2025. Regulators targeted SAP for allegedly hindering competition in the maintenance and support market for on-premise software.
The global concessions will remain in effect for 10 years. SAP agreed to scrap reinstatement fees and lower back-maintenance charges for returning customers.
EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera stated the decision eliminates unfair restrictions that inflated costs and stifled competition. SAP said the move provides its customers with greater clarity, choice, and safeguards.
