Shopify is seeking money transmitter licenses across the United States to expand its merchant financial services. The company has already secured these licenses in 18 states and Puerto Rico. It is now pursuing nationwide approval, including in strictly regulated markets like New York and California.

This initiative grants Shopify direct control over hundreds of billions of dollars in annual platform transactions. The licenses enable the company to hold and transfer funds for merchants as a provider of prepaid access. This operational model mirrors the functionality of services like Venmo.

The move scales existing fintech operations such as Shopify Capital and Shopify Payments. These services currently drive the core of the company’s Merchant Solutions revenue. By handling financial services in-house, Shopify aims to deepen merchant relationships and capture additional value.
