Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare approved Sanofi's Wayrilz (rilzabrutinib) for chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). This rare autoimmune disorder causes dangerously low platelet counts. The oral drug functions as a Bruton's tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitor to address the disease's underlying causes.

The approval provides a new therapeutic option for patients who failed to respond adequately to existing treatments. Data from the LUNA 3 Phase 3 clinical trial supported the regulatory decision. The study demonstrated that Wayrilz achieved a statistically significant durable platelet response compared to a placebo.

Wayrilz is already approved for ITP in the United States, the European Union, and the UAE. This Japanese authorization marks a significant milestone for Sanofi's expansion in the rare disease market.
