Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell Music filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Anthropic in California. The complaint also names Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and President Benjamin Mann as defendants.
Publishers allege the firm used tens of thousands of copyrighted songs to train its Claude AI models without permission. The lawsuit seeks statutory damages of up to $150,000 for each infringed song. Total liability for the AI firm could reach billions of dollars.
The plaintiffs claim Anthropic knowingly used pirated sources and torrent sites to acquire training data. This legal action follows previous copyright lawsuits against Anthropic by Universal Music Group, BMG, and Round Hill Music.
