Sibanye-Stillwater received a strike notice from the United Steelworkers union for its Montana operations. The industrial action begins September 3 at the Stillwater East mine and Columbus metallurgical facility.
The strike follows four months of failed negotiations regarding a productivity-led transformation program. Sibanye-Stillwater aims to implement mechanization and modern work practices to reduce operating costs.
The Stillwater East mine produces approximately 55% of the company’s U.S. platinum group metals output. Operations at the East Boulder mine remain unaffected under a separate agreement.
