Transelectrica triggers emergency Danube works, preventing nuclear shutdown during heatwave

Romania’s National Committee for Emergency Situations (CNSU) authorized emergency hydrotechnical interventions on the Danube River. These measures aim to prevent the shutdown of Unit 2 at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant (CNE).

Transelectrica issued a technical note warning of critical risks to the National Power System. A severe heatwave is forecasted to push national energy consumption to a peak of 8,000 MW.

Critically low water levels on the Danube currently threaten the nuclear plant’s cooling systems. This shortage coincides with reduced domestic hydropower production and uncertain regional energy import capacities.
