Anthropic hired Andrej Karpathy, the former head of artificial intelligence at Tesla. Karpathy joins the startup’s pretraining team to lead large-scale training for the Claude language model.
Karpathy previously directed development for Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) capabilities. CEO Elon Musk publicly cited Karpathy as a premier talent in the computer vision field.
The executive was also a founding member of OpenAI. Karpathy briefly worked on the Optimus humanoid robot program before leaving Tesla in 2022.
